The Raya [ the Governor ] of Krue-Se Town was a Muslim who had a beautiful daughter. Lim Toh Kiem had presented the silk cloth and valuable items to the Governor as the gifts in order to build the friendship. the Raya was satisfied and happy with his conduct so he had treated him specially. Lim Toh Kiem was a handsome man and knowledgeable in many areas including the battle. He and all his crews were brave and capable in fighting and swords-manship, especially his navigator who was skillful in building the cannon which was an important weapon for battle at that time. the Raya had ordered to build the cannons and his navigator successfully built 3 cannons which were called “Srinakari”, “Maha Lao Lor” and “Nang Pattani” or “Nang Phya Tani” which is presently located at the front of Ministry of Defense in Bangkok.
Eventually, the Raya had arranged a wedding for Lim Toh Kiem and his daughter according to the Islam due to Lim Toh Kiem had accepted to follow the Raya” s daughter to believe in Islam because he was in love with her. All his crews also decided not to return to China but to live with him in Krue-Se Town and converted into Muslims as same as him. They also married the local ladies of Krue-Se (Presently, it can be seen that the Muslims in the area of Ban Krue-Se who are the descendants of these families have fair complexion as same as the Chinese which are different from the local Muslims in the area).
Several years later, Lim Toh Kiem’s mother who lived in China had missed him so much until she got sick. Lim Kor Nieo and her sister felt pity on their mother and were also worried about their elder brother who had never contacted them since he left. She, therefore, volunteered to find him and to take him back to China. She had travelled to look for him until she met him. At that time, Lim Toh Kiem was in charge of building the Krue-Se Mosque. Lim Kor Nieo and her sister had stayed in Krue-Se Town for a period of time and tried to ask their brother to go back with them but he denied returning to his home town in China. Thinking that her brother would definitely not to change his mind, she decided to sacrifice her life in order to protest her brother by hanging herself under a cashew nut tree. However, before dying, she had cursed at her brother not to be successful in constructing the mosque. As for Lim Kor Nieo’s sister, she had followed her elder sister by committing suicide. All her crews also followed her by sailing to the sea and jumped to the sea leaving the vessel floating in the sea until wrecking and sinking to the sea remaining only 9 masts, which were made of the pine tree, showing above the sea. That area was later called “Rusamilae” in Malay
When Lim Toh Kiem learnt that he had to lose 2 sisters because of himself, he was deeply sad and had arranged the funeral rites according to the Chinese tradition in order to honor his sisters by building the tombs at Ban Krue-Se. Presently, only the tomb of Lim Kor Nieo was renovated and remained until the present time. After finishing the funeral rites, Lim Toh Kiem had continued building the mosque. But when the construction was about to complete by building the dome of the mosque, the dome was ruined by the thunder. This kind of event was happened repeatedly for 3 times. Lim Toh Kiem, finally, gave up continuing the construction. The Governor of Krue-Se was also scared by the curse and dared not continue constructing. So, the mosque was abandoned since then. Presently, the Fine Arts Department had registered to conserve the mosque to be an ancient mosque of Pattani. This mosque was built in late Ayutthaya reign and its age until present is almost 300 years.
At that time, the tomb of Lim Kor Nieo was worshipped by the Chinese. Anyone who got sick or had a misery would recover or be away from the misery and had a good fortune or good business when going to pledge for her help. The people, therefore, had named her as “Lim Kor Nieo Goddess” since then. Later, the cashew nut tree which she hanged herself was brought to carve her replica and was enshrined in a Shrine at Ban Krue-Se of Tanyong Lu Lo Sub-district for the people to worship her.
In 1984, Tan Ju Lai who was a leader of the Chinese community at that time had seen that the Shrine at Krue-Se village where Lim Kor Nieo Goddess was enshrined was old and decayed. Furthermore, it was about 8 kilometers away from town. He, therefore, had invited the replica of Lim Kor Nieo Goddess from Ban Krue-Se to enshrine in Joa Zu Kong Shrine which was located in the Chinese market in Pattani town and named that Shrine as “Leng Chu Kiang Shrine” or “Lim Kor Nieo Shrine” until the present. |
